A vintage rug is an individual piece. Its pattern, dimensions and condition need to be considered together, especially when you are choosing it for a particular room.
Ask about the stated origin, design and any evidence of age. “Vintage”, “antique” and “vintage-style” are not interchangeable descriptions. A newly woven rug with a distressed look is different from an older rug with genuine wear.
Where the rug was woven and where it was later repaired or restored can be different places. Ask whether the piece has been washed, repaired, recoloured, refinished or altered in size, and what is documented.
Review a full view of the front and reverse, then close-ups of the fringe, edges and worn areas. Check for an uneven outline and colour changes. These observations help you ask better questions; they do not establish fibre composition or age on their own.
Use the exact measurements and confirm the units. A rug listed as 2.48 × 3.23 metres is 248 × 323 centimetres. Make room for the furniture arrangement, circulation and door clearance, and ask whether the shape varies along its edges.
Understand existing wear and repairs before purchase. Ask about suitability for the proposed room and the care the piece needs. A rug intended for a quiet room may not be the best choice for the busiest passage through the house.
Age, surface direction and lighting can change how a rug reads in a room. View the actual piece where possible, and ask whether a home trial is available and what terms apply.
